Young Scouts from Eastleigh will launch their ‘Adult Volunteer’ recruitment campaign at the Town Centre Urban Beach on Saturday August 17th. The Scouts will build sandcastles to represent each of the new adult volunteers they need, to make sure that the boys and girls on their waiting list will be able to join.

Before new adults commit, they will be invited to work with Beavers, Cubs, Scouts or Explorers for just 4 weeks, before deciding. Adults don’t have to be a parent to be part of Eastleigh’s great leadership team, and even those who can only spare an hour a month are welcome.

Boss of Eastleigh District’s 799 Scouts Dick Whittington explains “Scouting is thriving with 6% growth last year. Our activities are all about providing young people with Skills for Life. For every new adult volunteer, we can invite another 5 local youngsters to gain these important transferable skills.”

Eastleigh’s newest adult volunteer is 26 year old Helen Hutchings, a chartered accountant, who adds “ Since volunteering in May I have felt very welcome and supported, and I’ve already had some really great adventures each time I’ve taken part”

Dick is also keen to stress that it’s not just about making a difference to the lives of local young people. He’s asking potential volunteers “When did you last climb a tree …. cook over an open fire …. canoe across a lake ….. climb the highest hill …. camp under the stars … laugh until your sides split. You could do all this and more as an adult volunteer with Eastleigh Scouts”.
